BIG STUFF

1950 CC&F built Parlor/Lounge

This very smooth riding light weight all welded body car has been our "test bed" for over 15 years for all such things as couplers, non-metallic wear liners, modified brake configurations, and various other projects. The poor beast has been used in about every railcar vocation including as a caboose on 70+ grain hopper trains, a covered gon for 70' sections of rail, through "private excursion service" with another car and two Geeps.

Built as a double vestibule 60 seat coach for CNR, in fact third from the last single level car with 6 wheel trucks, we received this car in deplorable condition, gutted, no windows, and desparately needing some TLC. We've partially converted the car to a 14 seat parlor, 16 spaces at 4 tables, and working on the 21 spaces for the lounge section. But she has lived a rough life, been ridden hard and put up wet a lot of times. We really would prefer to keep her, but we just don't have enough time to work on her when the car is over 10 hours away.

The parlor is laid out in the middle section with pedestal mounted, swiveling, armed chairs. The table section (was to have a galley there also) is in the women's lav end and has 4 booths, with lift up seats for storage. The men's lav end is gutted. The car is fully equipped with MR5500 double pane windows, ABDW-P (or PS68) brakes, and AP size D (5-1/2x10) grease bearings.

Even though this is a lightweight car body, it rides very smoothly thanks to those long wheelbase 6 wheel trucks. This was proven out several times after we removed the ice boxes for the AC and dropped the generator, really reducing the weight of the car. It still rode better than a modern light weight on critically sprung 4 wheel trucks. This car has standard Commonwealth (GSI design) full cast, drop equalizer, bolster anchors, coil primary and leaf secondary suspension with truck mounted 10" cylinders and clasp brakes.

For more info, see spec page.

The car is in Umler but not tagged.

Other Rolling Stock

We know where there is an ex-ATSF Pullman Standard stainless lunch counter car (x-ATSF 1575) that the city will probably sell real cheap, if someone will move it. Was converted to a restaurant off track, connected to a building for the kitchen services. Still has a lot of good parts including the CS couplers, D22 brakes, GSI 4 wheel ISH trucks. Last time we saw it, the sides were still not punky! Sitting in a storage lot now. If someone is interested, we'll take pictures and arrange an inspection. This is begging for a 501c3 operation to ask for donations from the owner and carrier to get it moved. Probably best for parts, possibly could be rebuilt.

Then of course there is the ubiquitous x-LIRR commuter cars.

Most of the railroads now sell their surplus through other means, inlcuding outside formal auctions. We don't get much directed to us anymore from the large railroads, but if there is something you need, let us know. We know where to find most of it!

We have placed some bids on surplus rolling stock and associated hardware lately, so keep an eye on this site to see what we got!
